When Traveling To Chile
Traveling By Air with Pets
If at all possible, it is best not to take your pet with you if you are planning to travel by air for a prolonged period of time, let’s say a flight that takes more than eight hours. And while sedating an animal has been the approved method of air travel for most animals, it is now being discouraged. In fact, some airlines will not allow you to sedate your animal prior to air travel. Reasons cited include the loss of an animal’s natural ability to balance and maintain their equilibrium under sedation, as well as the loss of their ability to regulate their body temperature and/or to control their own stress. This can become dangerous when and if the animal has to be moved during the flight.

If overly concerned, take the sedative yourself and enjoy your flight!
However, for whatever reasons we have for wanting to take our beloved pet with us when we travel, air travel for pets has improved greatly within the last decade. Always contact your airline well in advance to review their rules and regulations. Written and posted guidelines (usually on-line) are a good indication that an airline has given a good deal of thought to the safe transport of animals.
Another very important thing to check before departing for the airport is the weather. Most airlines stop transporting pets as checked baggage during extreme hot and cold weather and most adhere to the “day-of-travel” temperature restrictions. A simple phone call will let you know whether your pet will be traveling that day or not. Make sure you have a back-up plan for your pet in case this should happen.
Last, but not least, you should also inform yourself of the policies concerning the bringing of animals to other countries around the world. For example, with the exception of Continental Airlines, no other airlines from the USA will accept a pet for travel to the United Kingdom. The UK has multiple and stringent restrictions as it concerns the introduction of specific animals into their country. Continental Airlines is the first American airlines to be approved to bring pets into the UK. This is due to their pet travel program “Pet Safe.”
Other countries may require a letter from a veterinarian stating that your pet has all its required shorts and is in good health. For travel to countries which are part of the European Union, all pets must be fitted with a micro-chip for identification purposes. Some countries do not permit certain breeds of animals into their country. A good source of information for these types of questions is the “International Air Transport Association (IATA) and/or calling the consulate or embassy office of the country you are planning to visit for more detailed and up-to- date information.
